Pop Culture

Before reading John Storey’s essay “what is popular culture?” I believed that the definition of pop culture was something very direct, that it meant something “popular” (well liked). As I read more and more I realized that it wasn’t as easy as I first thought. Popular culture in defined in many different ways through the reading, Storey uses different sources to explain what pop culture is exactly. He breaks it down into six possible ways it could be defined. One of them being mass culture, Mass culture is everything that’s commercially produced. Storey explains  because of its mass production it can be seen as something not as good.  When I think of mass culture I think of the movie Mean Girls. Men Girls is probably one of the most well-known movies out there, but many people can argue that its popularity in away brainwashes the viewers. The movie nonetheless is part of pop culture, it represents American high school life and it became a huge hit. Means is great example of mass culture because it is known everywhere and is Americanized. Over all Popular culture can be define in many different ways, but in today’s growing media everything Is changing very fast and what might be popular today maybe  change in a matter of minutes.
